How to be effective on Twitter

Posted June 28, 2010 By in Social Media With | No Comments

It’s one of the most popular questions JSN clients ask us:  How will I be effective on Twitter.  We almost always answer “Well, that depends.  What is your goal?” and the latter is a question that is probably not asked very often.  Twitter marketing strategies are definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution.  Based on what you are trying to accomplish on Twitter – creating awareness of your non-profit, selling a product, running a catering business, building a community around your blog – each strategy needs to be crafted to increase the return on your investment and involvement.

Simply throwing tons of information in your tweets and not being involved in a conversation will almost guarantee an unsuccessful effort.  While you don’t always have to keep your tweets topical to your brand (say, re-tweeting a funny news story from one of your valued followers), you also should be aware of not putting out too much irrelevant information,  Also, overloading your twitter feed with tons of automated tweets that fill up your follower’s pages are sure to get you delisted and unfollowed.

We came across a great slide show linked on the Marketing Tech Blog with 140 Twitter Tips – all of them, of course, in 140 characters or less.

Twitter is a conversation.  Take some time to listen to what is going on and respond, don’t just talk at people @virtualewit

Don’t get caught up in the numbers game.  100 relevant followers on Twitter is worth more than 1000 followers on any day of the week @bradjward

Be a person to follow – not just a twitter account @ericblonde

The full slide show can be seen here: http://www.slideshare.net/KyleLacy/140-twitter-tips.  Great to scroll through while finishing up your morning coffee.
