Twitter Squatters – Have You Claimed Your Name?

Posted August 24, 2010 By in Blog, Business Tips, Social Media With | No Comments

Have you claimed your Twitter name yet?  More importantly, has someone else claimed your twitter name?  Many of us can remember back to the 1990′s when the internet was booming.  Some individuals thought it would be a smart idea to gobble up some popular business name dot coms in the hopes that the business (or actor/actress/musician) would pay them big bucks to get their name back.  Enter in the murky waters of seeking legal action against those who originally claimed that domain to get it back.

Twittersquatting is something that we have run into more than we had anticipated here at JSN.  And unfortunately, it’s something that we have little control over, if any.  Often times, clients or brands will alter their handles slightly, still being able to build their community and have people identify their brand with their social media sites.

Have you searched for yourself on Twitter or Facebook??  Does someone have your  name?  We conducted some very unscientific and unofficial research and looked at a few brands on Twitter.

    • In-N-Out Burger, the best place in California to buy burgers (from what I hear), has almost 2300 Twitter followers at twitter.com/innoutburger.  However, It’s not their official Twitter page.  They don’t have one (yet) and this is being run by a fan.
    • Charm City Cakes, the bakery featured on Food Network’s hit show “Ace of Cakes” has their official Twitter page at twitter.com/Charm_CityCakes.  I’m curious to know if that’s because someone already went in and took twitter.com/charmcitycakes.
    • Prada, one of the world’s top luxury retailers, is most definitely not at twitter.com/prada.  That account has almost 300 followers, but this account isn’t representing the beautiful clothes and bags that the Italian company creates.

Even if your business isn’t quite ready to jump into Twitter, it’s definitely a great idea to claim your name so it’s yours.  To read more about twittersquatting or how your company can fight against it, visit the links below:
