As I prepared to sit down to write about Tumblr, an emerging microblogging site, my fiance turns to me (not knowing what I was working on here at the desk) and says “What’s Tumblr?”. Everyone is asking about it, trying to figure out if they “need” it, so let’s take a look. What IS Tumblr?
Tumblr is a social network, taking some of the features of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and MySpace, and meshing them all into one, neat, easy-to-use site. Founded in 2007, Tumblr boasts over 3 Million users, and is a rapidly growing site, with bloggers, celebrities and corporations Tumbling on in. One of the things Tumblr touts is ease of use and customization. Both of those points, I definitely agree on.
With Tumblr, you can add your own text posts (as short as a 140-character “tweet” or as long as a blog entry), upload & share photos & videos (a la Facebook & YouTube), customize your page with a background of your choice (my absolute favorite feature of MySpace) and a “repost” (similar to a Twitter re-tweet), where users can take a blog post from another Tumblree and put it on their own blog, or “like” them (like Facebook).
So with all of these similarities, why use Tumblr? Well, that depends mostly on what your social media strategies are. Each social media outlet isn’t a one-site-fits-all solution, and whichever ones your business engages in, you should always have a clear, focused strategy. Many users are taking to Tumblr to house their blog. Tumblr offers great features such as a directory of blogs, and users can rate & recommend your blog – appearing on the front page of that directory.
